Computer Use, Browser Tool, Skills API, and Files API (Generally Available)
Four building blocks for agents on the Claude Platform move out of beta, for developers building on the API.
Details
- Computer use lets Claude operate software by reading screenshots and clicking, typing, and scrolling
- Claude now takes several actions per turn instead of one per round trip with the computer_toolset_20260801 version, and early-access customers saw 20 to 40% fewer round trips per task
- The new browser tool reads page structure alongside screenshots, so Claude targets web elements instead of pixel positions
- The Skills API lets developers upload and version folders of instructions, scripts, and templates that load only when needed and run in Claude's sandbox, with no hosting to manage
- The Files API stores documents agents read and write, so a file is uploaded once and referenced by ID afterward, and it adds automatic expiration, 5x higher rate limits, and 1 TB of storage per organization
- Computer use is now covered under Anthropic's business associate agreement for HIPAA-regulated workloads
- The Skills and Files APIs are also on Microsoft Foundry, with Google Cloud Vertex AI listed as coming
Best for
Building an agent that has to operate software with no API behind it, like an internal tool or a vendor portal.
When to use it
A workflow only exists as clicks in someone's browser and you want Claude to run it end to end.
