Skills in Copilot Studio
Reusable instruction files you write once and add to any Copilot Studio agent.
Details
- A skill is a name, a description, and a set of Markdown instructions telling the agent how to handle one kind of task
- The orchestration runtime activates a skill by matching the user's request against the skill's description, so the description is what makes it fire at the right moment
- Skills sit apart from tools and knowledge: tools call outside services, knowledge is data to reference, and a skill is self-contained instructions
- You can write them in Copilot Studio or any text editor, then export as a Markdown file or a ZIP package carrying supporting scripts and templates
- Runs on the GitHub Copilot harness, which bills in Copilot Credits for using, building, testing, and evaluating
Best for
Standardizing how agents handle a recurring task across a whole team
When to use it
Several agents need the same behavior and you are tired of pasting the same instructions into each one
Who benefits
Anyone building more than one agent in Copilot Studio
