Microsoft MAI Models

Microsoft's family of in-house AI models expanded at Build 2026 with its first reasoning model plus new coding, image, voice, and transcription models, all available through Microsoft Foundry.

Details

  • MAI-Thinking-1 is Microsoft's first reasoning model, tuned for efficiency at a low token cost.
  • MAI-Code-1 is a coding model that plugs into GitHub Copilot and VS Code.
  • MAI-Image-2.5, with a faster MAI-Image-2.5-Flash variant, generates images and is available in PowerPoint and Foundry, with OneDrive coming soon.
  • MAI-Transcribe-1.5 handles transcription across 43 languages, and MAI-Voice-2 generates speech in more than 15 additional languages.
  • All are reachable through Microsoft Foundry and a dedicated MAI Playground, part of Microsoft's push to own more of its own model stack.

Best for

Building on Microsoft's own models inside the Foundry developer stack instead of relying only on partner models like OpenAI's.

When to use it

You build on Azure or Foundry and want first-party models for reasoning, code, image, voice, or transcription.

Who benefits

Developers and teams building AI features on the Microsoft stack.
