Transparent Backgrounds for GPT-Image-2 (Preview)

Image generation can return a transparent background instead of a filled one, for developers using the API.

Details

Set the background parameter to transparent to turn it on
Works with png or webp output; jpeg does not support transparency
Available for gpt-image-2 and gpt-image-2-2026-04-21 in both the Images API and the Responses API image generation tool
In preview, so behavior can still change

Best for

Generating a logo, product cutout, or icon you can drop onto any background without cutting it out by hand.

When to use it

The same generated asset has to sit on a light page, a dark page, and a social card.
