AGENTS.md Support in Claude Code

Claude Code now reads an AGENTS.md file in projects that don't have a CLAUDE.md.

Details

In a project with no CLAUDE.md, Claude Code reads AGENTS.md instead and treats it as the project instructions
Which file it uses is configurable under Project instructions in /config
Shipped in Claude Code v2.1.277
Not yet available on Bedrock, Vertex, or Foundry

Best for

Repos that already carry instructions in the shared AGENTS.md format used by other coding agents.

When to use it

Your team writes one instructions file for several AI tools and doesn't want to maintain a Claude-specific copy.
